The South Australian Geophysical Reference Model (SAGRM) forms part of a collaborative project between the Department of State Development, the University of Adelaide, Geoscience Australia and the Deep Exploration Technologies Cooperative Research Centre.
It is a valuable new research and exploration tool that enables users to visualise, query and interpret the state’s vast archive of geophysical datasets in a full 3D environment.
The model incorporates new gravity, magnetic, and magnetotelluric inversions with existing deep crustal reflection seismic surveys and seismological velocity models into an integrated state-wide 3D model to a depth of 100 km.
This is the first time a model of this size and complexity of geophysical data has been produced for the entire state. The model is a significant contribution to the lithospheric architecture theme of the UNCOVER initiative. The SAGRM is designed to be readily updated and will incorporate new datasets, such as AusLAMP, AusArray and the Gawler Craton magnetic survey, as they become available.
The model includes constrained gravity and magnetic inversions for South Australia that were run using University of British Columbia inversion codes provided through the National Computational Infrastructure in Canberra.
These inversions were run with publicly available geophysical data including magnetotelluric, resistivity and seismic velocity models integrated in GoCAD geological modelling software. Additional datasets also included in the modelling process include topographical data and petrophysical data for the entire state.
