To promote mineral exploration within the state, the South Australian Government has undertaken major airborne and ground based geophysical surveys in key areas of the State.
PACE Musgrave Province Airborne Electromagnetic Survey
The PACE Musgrave Province Airborne Electromagnetic Survey comprises 17,395 line kilometres of new data in one of the last true exploration frontier areas in Australia. The data will be instrumental in defining potential for mineral and water resources in this region. The Musgrave Province, which extends into Northern Territory and Western Australia, is highly prospective for nickel, copper and platinum mineral systems and exploration in this region is currently being undertaken by Pepinnini Minerals Limited and Musgrave Minerals Limited.

PACE Copper Coompana Gravity Survey
The PACE Copper Coompana Gravity Survey comprises over 13,000 new gravity observations in the state’s far west. The area is largely underexplored and these data provide new insight into the underlying geology, with implications not only for the exploration community both locally and throughout South Australia, but also the economy of South Australia. The Coompana area is prospective for Gold, Nickel, and Copper, and Exploration work in the area is currently being undertaken by Oz Exploration Pty Ltd.

Coompana magnetic and radiometric survey

The western Gawler Craton and basement to the Eucla Basin are some of the last truly underexplored green-field terrains in South Australia. Located under shallow to thick cover adjacent to the Southern boundary of the Woomera Prohibited Area, the regions present a significant opportunity to open up new ground for exploration in the state and to probe methods for exploring through cover.
New deep crustal seismic section (13GA-EG1), together with new gravity and magnetotelluric data, has been captured from Tarcoola in South Australia to Haig in Western Australia. These 834 kilometres of continuous data will help open up new opportunities for explorers in South Australia and stimulate mineral exploration investment in the states underexplored west.
The survey is a collaborative project between the Geological Survey of South Australia, the Geological Survey of Western Australia, Geoscience Australia and AuScope Earth Imaging, with funding in South Australia provided through the PACE initiative.
Due to the length of the survey line, the data has been processed and released in a number of batches. This first section of the line covered the western Gawler Craton, covering ~360 km from near Cook to Tarcoola in the central Gawler Craton. The data for this segment (13GA-EG1E) is available to download now in SEGY format (unmigrated field stacks and migrated data). Also available are the results of collaborative interpretations of the seismic and magnetotelluric data presented at the ‘What lies beneath the western Gawler Craton? 13GA-EG1E Seismic and Magnetotelluric Workshop 2015’, which includes an extended abstract volume (Report Book 2015/00029) and poster sized image of the interpretations.
The remainder of the seismic and magnetotelluric line, including the Coompana Province and Madura Province, has been processed and was released at the Australian Earth Sciences Convention (AESC) in June 2016.What lies beneath the western Gawler Craton? 13GA-EG1E Seismic and Magnetotelluric Workshop 2015. A total of 821 readings were collected at 2km spacing along existing roads and tracks. This work was performed in conjunction with the ongoing Geological Survey of South Australia (GSSA) Musgrave Province mapping programme. Previous coverage was historical 7km x 7km coverage, collected in the 1960s and 1970s.
The survey has been designated the code 2014A1 for incorporation into the South Australian government geoscience database SA_Geodata, and is available for download via SARIG.

This detailed gravity survey was proposed by the Geological Survey of South Australia (GSSA) to deliver a vital new precompetitive dataset for explorers targeting Olympic Dam style Iron Oxide Copper Gold (IOCG) mineralisation within the Gawler Graton.
The survey sees 34,541 new gravity measurements added to the state Gravity database at 1km x 1km resolution, except within the continual use zone of the Woomera Prohibited Area (WPA) where resolution is 2km x 2km.
The gravity survey provides new, pre-competitive data that more clearly defines broad geology and structure in deeply covered areas within the Gawler Craton, and is of sufficient resolution to detect large-scale IOCG systems.
The WPA Gravity Survey (2013A01_GRAV_DS) is available for download via SARIG.
The Marree Magnetic and Radiometric Survey provides 131,437 line km of new magnetic and radiometric geophysical data within an area of approximately 45,000 square km, situated to the north of the Flinders Ranges.
The majority of magnetic coverage in this area is historical data from 1961-66 at a spacing of 3.2 km or greater. There is little to no radiometric coverage.
The new, high quality magnetic data is of a resolution that clearly delineates sub-surface geological features which are important exploration criteria used for targeting a range of commodities, including sandstone hosted uranium.
